GGNA Tree Plan
Ratified by meeting of a quorum majority of homeowners at 7pm October 16, 2024
Goal:
To have appropriate tree coverage for Cedar Glen North Association property that provides shade, enhances appearance, is non-invasive, provides benefits for wildlife, and is safe and easy to maintain.
As trees have matured over a 35–40-year span, some may need to be removed and others pruned. New trees may be planted where appropriate. This work is being done in stages for budget reasons and to minimize drastic change to the landscape.
Plan:
To remove trees that may be unsafe or may cause damage to buildings or other property and trees that are dead or dying. When appropriate and feasible, replacement trees are planted the following spring.
Not every tree that is removed will be replaced, however, because some trees were originally planted too close to buildings or too close to one another. The plan also includes pruning where needed to clear roofs, decks, walkways and roads or to improve appearance and health.
We will engage a professional tree service to help us prioritize trees that may pose a threat. A certified arborist will guide our choices of new trees to include native species and attractive ornamentals that provide variety and are appropriate in size and for location and soil conditions. Landscape Plants for Vermont published by UVM Extension is also used as a guide for selecting new plants.
Concerns:
Numerous large trees (100-190 feet tall) may threaten the safety of buildings. Because they are the tallest trees in the area, they may attract lightning strikes. Recently, a tree was uprooted and caused significant damage.
White pines are large trees prone to winter and ice damage, also need to be pruned to keep them from getting too large and overgrown. Some are being removed because they are too close to each other or to buildings.

“Norway maple forms monotypic populations by displacing native trees, shrubs and herbaceous understory plants. Once established, it creates a canopy of dense shade that prevents regeneration of native seedlings.” -National Park Service
“The dense canopy formed by Norway maple inhibits the regeneration of sugar maple and other tree seedlings, reducing forest diversity. Also, since Norway maple has shallow roots, it competes with other plants in the landscape, including grasses, and can cause damage to pavement in urban settings.”
